Why Women Experience Sexual Dysfunction

Causes of Female Sexual Dysfunction

Overall physical and emotional health plays a large role in your sexual health, so it should come as no surprise that certain health conditions can lower your interest in and enjoyment of sex. Common causes of women’s sexual dysfunction include:

Drinking too much alcohol or using drugs
Hormone changes during pregnancy and following childbirth
Stress and fatigue
Boredom in the bedroom
Lower levels of the hormone estrogen, which occurs after menopause
Side effects of medications as wide-ranging as chemotherapy to birth control pills
Health conditions like vaginal infections, high blood pressure, and diabetes
Risk Factors for Sexual Dysfunction

Risk factors for low libido and other forms of sexual dysfunction include:

A history of sexual abuse or trauma
High levels of stress at work or at home
Being pregnant or having just had a baby
Going through menopause or being post-menopausal
Substance abuse problems with alcohol or drugs
Managing Sexual Dysfunction

If a medical condition is causing your sexual dysfunction or low libido, treatment should get it under control. Managing health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes by taking prescribed medications and making healthier lifestyle choices is essential. If you're post-menopausal, you may want to consider estrogen therapy to increase libido and to manage other symptoms of sexual dysfunction.

Experimenting when it comes to sex also can help women overcome sexual dysfunction. New positions, places to have sex, techniques, and ways to enjoy yourself can help you break out of a rut and experience pleasure again. A healthy, open, and honest relationship is a great libido enhancer for women.
